I had reached the far side of the road and was backing up to our property line when I hit the fence. My heart froze. The zombies had fanned out as they came at me, not so much in any real strategy I could see, mostly just because the faster ones were trying to move around the slower ones, but now I had no room to get around the flanks on either side of the horde. I started shooting faster, trying to keep my breathing calm, but knowing I would never put enough of the creatures down to stop them before they reached me.

Still I kept firing as they drew closer. Bam! Bam! Bam! The gun barked with each shot and zombies fell, tripping up the ones behind them. But they just kept coming.

I heard the roar of the diesel before I saw the truck come blaring down the road. It was Tabby behind the wheel of my Dodge pick-up. The big beast plowed into the mass of undead, dipping dangerously close to me as she brought it off the road and smashed the truck through the crowd.

Zombies crunched and fell, knocked out of the way or ground under the heavy duty pick-up’s wheels. I had to duck out of the way of two undead that slammed into the fence where I’d been standing. They slumped helplessly to the ground, their broken arms and legs unable to do more than impotently flail. I kept firing, picking off the ones she missed in her first pass, even as Tabby brought the truck to a screeching halt just down the road.

Not being into self-preservation, the zombies in the back continued their advance and began tromping stoically through the remains of their friends. Tabby leaned out the window to look back at me. I waved and she smiled before slamming the truck into reverse.

The truck swerved drunkenly as it barreled back down the road, but Tabby didn’t need to go off the blacktop this time and the wide rear bumper caught ghoul after ghoul in a grotesque symphony of cracking bones and rending flesh. Still, after she’d plowed through them again, there were enough left that she had to do it one more time, slipping the big truck back into low gear and methodically running down each of the zombies on the road.

When it was finally over, my truck was a wreck. The front end was smashed in a dozen places and the vehicle looked like it had driven head first into a slaughterhouse. But the only movement other than my panting for breath was the occasional feeble twitch of one of the creatures. It was a mass of carnage the likes of which I don’t think I’d ever seen.

“I thought you said you had things under control!” Tabby said, hopping out of the truck and almost slipping in a pile of gory entrails.

I grimaced. Now that I had time to think about it, the scene was so macabre and sickening I wanted to puke, but I stifled it as best I could.
